After the movie was over I kept thinking about all the different ways Wanda could’ve gotten what she wanted that didn’t involve murdering so many people and you’re right! The movie is full of the usual tropes of powerful women being enemies, power driving women mad. All of the women that she comes in contact with in the movie, America, her alternate self, Christine, she could have worked with to achieve her goal of becoming a mother, but I guess that makes for a much less exciting film to see women behaving cooperatively with each other.
One of the ways I judge a film might be feminist is not just about how the women are treated on the story, but how and why the women interact in the story. Are they enemies or Do they work together? Do they help and/or support each other? Are any of the women friends?
In Thor Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi looks set to break that trope, which is why I want to see it. Jane/Thor, and Valkyrie appear to be supportive friends to each other, and Taika has a good track record of thinking about those types of things.
